Realize and Realize Reader 19.1 Release Notes
June 14, 2019
The Realize and Realize Reader Release Notes provide descriptions of the major feature enhancements, resolved issues, and known issues for the release.
Feature Enhancements
Google Classroom™ integration enhancements
With this new release, Realize is rolling out the Google Classroom™ integration to all customers. The feature enables teachers to import classes and rosters from Google Classroom™ to create new classes in Realize. The imported classes receive push notification updates when the roster changes in Google Classroom™, keeping the Realize roster in sync with the Google Classroom™ roster source. Once a Google Classroom™ class is imported into Realize, teachers can assign Realize content to students and the assignment appears in the corresponding Google Classroom™ class.
Students can then use their Google™ credentials to log in to Google Classroom™, where they will see the teacher-created assignments. Students have single sign-on (SSO) access to Realize directly from the Google Classroom™ assignment links. Realize passes the student’s score for each scored assignment to Google Classroom™ so teachers don't have to manually copy and paste scores between the two systems.
Create content in MY LIBRARY
Teachers can now create content directly in the recently added MY LIBRARY. A new Create Content panel provides options for uploading files from the teacher's computer, Google Drive™, or Microsoft OneDrive®, adding links, building tests, writing custom essay prompts, and creating playlists.
Build customized lesson playlists
A new playlist feature enables teachers to create lesson playlists that contain Savvas program content, as well as their own custom content. Once a playlist is created, they can easily assign content items from the playlist and provide students with an assignment that contains a custom combination of content and activities.
Playlists can be created directly from MY LIBRARY, where teachers can then choose to browse programs to find content items for the new playlist.
Playlists can also be created by selecting a new Add to playlist option available when browsing content from almost anywhere within Realize.
Browse replaces Programs for teachers and students
For both teachers and students, when they select BROWSE in the top menu bar, or the green Browse circle on the home page, the Browse Programs page appears, allowing them to browse through all of their subscribed Savvas program content.
Student grouping based on performance
Performance analysis has been added to the Scores section of the Class results by assignment report, enabling teachers to group students by their performance on a test. After selecting a test in the Scores section, teachers can use the new Performance Analysis tab to view student performance for that test and then choose a Break point to group those students based on their performance.
Teachers can then assign recommended remediation and enrichment materials aligned with the test results.
Score value ranges for Essay Scorer enhanced
The Essay Scorer has been enhanced to display a broader range of score values and progress bars have replaced stars to better indicate the student's score.
As students complete an untrained essay assignment, they can view an overall score represented by a progress bar. As they complete a trained essay assignment, the feedback on six writing traits also displays as progress bars.
As teachers review student's completed assignments that include a trained essay assignment, they can now select Show Essay Scores in the Assigned work section to view the scores for six writing traits.
Help menu enhancements
The help menu now contains additional options so teachers can better understand where and how to obtain information and assistance.
- Program Training—Access live virtual training, on-demand tutorials, and guides through My Savvas Training.
- Technical Support—Contact Savvas PreK-12 School Support.
- Online Help—Access the Realize online help system.
- Contact a Program Specialist—Contact a Savvas Training Specialist.
New default sort order for assignments
The default sort order for assignments for both students and teachers is now sorted by due date, showing the most recent assignments first.
- For teachers, the change applies to the Assignments by class and Assignments by student lists.
- For students, the change applies to the Completed assignments list. Not Started and In progress assignments lists still show the most overdue or due next assignments first.
- For all lists, the sort order can be changed by selecting the column header.
Turn In button improvements for students
The turn-in process for students completing a multi-activity assignment has been enhanced to help prevent students from accidentally turning in incomplete assignments.
As they progress through the activities, the activity tabs indicate when they are Completed or In Progress. For activities that do not provide embedded tools to submit their work, the activity tab provides a Mark As Complete option.
When finished, students select the Turn In All button at the top of the assignment viewer. If any activities have not been completed, a confirmation box appears, listing incomplete activities. The student can then choose Keep Going to complete the activities, or Turn In All again to turn in the assignment with incomplete activities.
Send to Teacher enhancements for Early Learners
The turn-in process for students using the Early Learning theme has also been enhanced to help prevent students from sending the assignment to the teacher before all of the activities are complete. If the student selects Send to Teacher before they have completed all of the activities, a confirmation box appears, prompting them to confirm if they are really ready to turn in the assignment.
Realize Reader bookshelf sorts by assigned books
The Default and Early Learning themed bookshelves in the web, Chrome™, Windows®, and iOS® apps are now sorted to first display the books with incomplete assignments in alphabetical order by title. Next, the unassigned books display in alphabetical order by title.
Realize Reader 2 Page View
Teachers and students using the Default or Early Learning theme in the web, Chrome, Windows, or iOS apps can now open some books in a two-page spread view for easier reading. When the spread view is available in a book, the user can select 2 Page View in the reading pane and then use the Realize Reader zoom options for a closer look. For the best results on touch devices, use the Realize Reader zoom options.
Known Issues
RRS assignment issues using Microsoft Edge® 18.x
Content may not load or function properly for students using Microsoft Edge® 18.x to complete their Realize Reader Selection assignments. Until this issue is resolved, we recommend using the Chrome or Firefox® browser.
Short delay for roster updates from Google Classroom™ to Realize
When teachers add or remove a student from the Google Classroom™ roster, the update to Realize may take 1-2 minutes. We are working to shorten this delay for a future release.
New contents created in MY LIBRARY may not appear immediately
In some instances, new content created directly in MY LIBRARY may not immediately appear. If this delay occurs, select another location in Realize and then return to the library to see the newly added content.
