Annotations and Highlights with a Screen Reader
If you have Caret Browsing enabled in your web browser, you can use your keyboard to create, update, and delete your annotations and highlights.
Press F7 in most browsers to enable Caret Browsing. If using NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access), you may need to use virtual buffer pass-through mode to open annotations [NVDA key + spacebar].
Add Annotations and Highlights
- Use the Tab key on your keyboard to navigate to the reading pane.
- Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, navigate to the text you want to highlight.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + right arrow keys to highlight the text, and then press Tab.
- Press Tab to navigate through the highlighting styles, and then press Enter to make your style selection.
- Press Tab to navigate through the highlighting colors, and then press Enter to make your color selection.
- Press Tab to navigate to the text editor box and enter up to 1,000 characters for your annotation.
- Press Tab to navigate to Save, and then press Enter.
Edit Annotations and Highlights

Use the Tab key on your keyboard to navigate to the reading pane.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + right arrow keys to select the currently highlighted text.
- Press Tab to navigate to navigate through the highlighting styles, and then press Enter to make your new style choice.
- Press Tab to navigate through the highlighting colors, and then press Enter to make your new color selection.
- Press Tab until your reach the annotation text box, and then edit your text.
- Press Tab to navigate to Save, and then press Enter.
Delete Annotations and Highlights
When you delete a highlight or annotation, any associated comments are also deleted.
- Use the Tab key on your keyboard to navigate to the reading pane.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + right arrow keys to select the currently highlighted text.
- Press Tab to navigate to Delete, and then press the Enter key.
- In the delete confirmation, press Tab to navigate to Delete , and then press Enter.
