Reading Course and Assignment Settings

The Reading courseClosed A series of lessons within a curriculum. Courses are default or customized courseware that is delivered via licensing to a district or school and that contains content defined by the SuccessMaker product and the Math or Reading subject. and assignmentClosed A lesson or set of lessons that a student is expected to complete. Once a default or customized course is assigned to students or groups, they are referred to as assignments. settings display when:

Depending on the status and type of course or assignment, you can modify one or more of the settings.

Fields Defaults Descriptions

Session length

20 minutes

Sets the length of time from 5-180 minutes that a student is allowed to work in a course for each session. When the session ends, the Progress Report displays and the student must sign in again.

Idle time

5 minutes

Sets the elapsed time limit for student inactivity. The Idle time can be from 2 to 6 minutes. One minute prior to the idle time elapsing, a warning indicator appears. When the idle time elapses the student is signed out.

Show/limit progress report

3 times per session

Sets the number of times from 0-10 that a student can view the Progress Report within a session. When set to 0, the Progress Report is deactivated. When the setting is deactivated or the student has reached the limit, the Progress Report icon is unavailable.

DEFAULT TRANSLATION LANGUAGE None Enables the ability to translate instructions in the language selected for all students or groups in the assignment that have been set to default.

Initial Placement (IP)

On

Activates or deactivates IPClosed Initial Placement; the first level of entry into a course. for the student/group.

  • If students begin the course with Initial Placement set to Off, they cannot be placed into it later.
  • If the starting point for the course is manually set using the Course Level control, the Initial Placement setting defaults to Off.
  • After the starting point is set manually, you can modify this setting to activate IP.

Display LO information

On

Controls the display of the LOClosed Learning Object - A learning object is a collection of shared content objects related to a skill. ID to the student.

Help icon active

On

Controls the access to Help for the student.

Exit course button

On

  • When set to On, the student can use the blue X (Exit Course) button or press SHIFT+DOWN ARROW to exit the course.
  • When set to Off, the blue X button is unavailable and the student must press SHIFT+DOWN ARROW to exit the course.

If the SHIFT+DOWN ARROW keys have already been designated as shortcut keys for another program, that shortcut must be removed from the other program before SHIFT+DOWN ARROWwill end the session.

Spanish glossary

Off

  • When set to On, the Spanish toggle button is available in the Glossary window below the definition.
  • When set to Off, the Spanish toggle button is unavailable.

Grammar strand

Off

  • When set to On, grammar strand content is included in the assignment.
  • When set to Off, grammar strand content is not included in the assignment.

This setting can be turned On at any time, but once it is turned On, it cannot be turned Off.

READ TO ME (GRADES 3+)

Off
  • When set to On, passage text audio is enabled for Text Reader and Reading Portal Learning ObjectsClosed A collection of shared content objects related to a skill. and the Read to Me button is enabled, allowing the student from hearing the passage text read aloud.
    • Auto play, hover text, and click to play audio for the passage text WILL play.
    • Instruction audio, activity questions, answer options, Glossary entries, and Coach prompt WILL play.
  • When set to Off, all audio in the course is disabled.

This setting will only impact students that are in Grade 3 or higher and that Grades K, 1, and 2 will have this setting ON by default.

 

share at district level?

Off Enables or disables sharing of the course at the district level. By turning this option on you enable the Admin to share the course with other organizations in the same district.

Fluency

On

  • When set to On, the student can perform fluency activities.
  • When set to Off, a confirmation message appears and the Fluency recording time setting defaults to 0.

Fluency recording time

5 minutes

Sets the total time a student is allowed to record each reading of the fluency activities. Fluency activities include retelling of a passage, and oral reading of words, phrases, or a passage. The recording time can be from 1-10 minutes. When the maximum time is reached, the recording is stopped.

Manually set course level

Off

When set to On, overrides the demographic grade level and enables you to manually set the Course Level control.

Course level

NA

Adjusts the course level. If Manually set course level setting is On, adjusts the Course Level by clicking and dragging it with the mouse pointer. The value changes in increments of 0.25, up to maximum limit of 8.75.

The Initial Placement setting affects the Course Level setting. You can either set the course level manually or rely on IP.
